1. How did you begin your career?
I was a student at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and I won prizes for being the best student in first and second year. I graduated with a first-class degree and was only one of four people to do so in my year. I stayed at LSE to teach and to do postgraduate work, which is how I started my career. I essentially drifted into it; I wasn’t sure what other options I had, or whether I particularly wanted to stay on at university, but I enjoyed it. I taught at both LSE and the University of Bristol at the same time, which were my main entry points into my career in academia.
2. How did you become interested in this field of supporting education and schools?
I’ve been in education all throughout my career. Even after leaving full-time academic education to work in business, I still maintained my academic credentials by writing books, of which I’ve written over 50 (although I’ve been beaten by my brother, who published over 100, 3 of which posthumously!). A few years ago, Nick Richardson, who is the director of Marketing Advisers for Schools wanted to put together a team. Taking into consideration my educational background and then the work with Nick on agricultural research, it made sense for me to be brought in to help work on Marketing Advisers for Schools, which is how I got into supporting education and schools with their digital marketing campaigns.
3. What is your role as part of the MA for Schools team?
Well, my educational background is very relevant and I’m still in contact with lots of people in teaching and education. The real reason is when I left full-time education, I ended up being involved in the internet and in particular, in paid search advertising, which almost became full time, although I always kept my academic credentials going. So, the three main aspects that apply to my role are the paid search expertise, educational background and my business acumen and knowledge from previous experiences such as mergers and takeovers. In my role, I also bring a financial aspect, and am still writing books on financial reporting, auditing and general finance.
4. What do you like most about your work?
Well, although many people of my age retire from work, I never want to retire. I enjoy working and I enjoy the work that we do with schools and in other areas of marketing. Another thing in particular: I have a keen interest in technological development, which has never waned. Back in the 90’s, I worked on a project for ‘video telephones’, which I thought would take a while to come into the market. However, they happened naturally through smart phones, demonstrating how quickly the market changes. It is just fascinating to see the way the world works. One of the things I helped to create in the world of finance, was financial modelling. Rather than ledgers and writing, we used computers to predict the future and the growth within that sector is incredible. I like to stay current and learn about new trends in technology and finance, and in the wider business and marketing community.
5. What is a personal goal you are currently working towards?
I don’t really have any huge personal goals, because I have done a lot in my life. I guess I could say my personal goals are to help evolve the MA for Schools business and try and stay on top of things! I find with Google Paid Search Ads, they send out policy updates frequently- it's almost impossible to keep up, but I want to try! I’m committed to finish a current book on auditing and I would like to see the MA for Schools business evolve, which is going to require a lot of work and effort.
6. What current issues and trends in the field should we know about/be aware of?
I think the whole area of marketing is changing rapidly. Knocking on doors is a thing of the past, and the approach has changed greatly over the years, and will continue to do so. The emailing strategy may work for a while, but I think the market is going to turn to a more proactive approach, in which the consumer starts looking for what they want online. This will cause the whole commercial environment to change, but it is not a static environment, and will continuously evolve.
7. If you could do it all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? If not, what would you change?
The thing I regret most, is when I got my first-class honours from LSE in 1967, I was offered by the University of Chicago Business School a funded, 4-year scholarship and a teaching post, and I rejected it. One of the main reasons was that there were race riots in Chicago in that time, and as someone who is half-Indian, I was scared to live on my own in that city. I regret that decision greatly, as it would’ve changed my life, as it was a school of major influence in business and economics. Overall, however, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done. I have had a very varied life and lived in several countries, I’ve travelled and lived extensively in the US and France and worked in various fields. I have also had the chance to travel for work in China, Malaysia, India and Singapore. I have had a good life, and I have enjoyed it.
